Spring 2019 Kayak Fishing Opportunities in Southern New England

by Tom Houde

Spring brings many kayak fishing opportunities for Southern New Englanders. The calendar recorded the arrival of spring on the 20th of March and it was accompanied by the full moon, aka The Worm Moon. With the arrival of spring I start to monitor several herring runs. I like to record the arrival of herring each year so I can predict when my fishing season will start. I made a short video Friday the 28thof March with visual evidence of herring swimming in one of the herring runs. A previous trip a few days earlier revealed 3 herring carcasses that had been half consumed by a predator, but no herring taking a break before the last sprint up to the pond. When the herring arrive my unofficial spring starts and signals the beginning of another fishing season.

If you haven’t readied your fishing equipment or kayak, now is the time to do so. It’s also a good time to start scheduling some kayak outings or tournaments as well. Let’s take a look at a few events that will be taking place this year.

These are a few events that I will be participating in to get my kayak angling season underway. This is not an exhaustive listing of all the potential functions that I will be attending. My membership in the Rhode Island Saltwater Anglers Association and the Aquidneck Island Striper Team leave me with a full calendar of activities. Lead-fest, RISAA Kayak committee spring meeting, opening day of trout season, a fly tying and fishing event hosted by Dare to Dream Ranch, and a Pollock trip out of Plymouth, MA along with the start of On The Water Striper Cup are a few others that are a guaranteed good time shared with friends.
