Paddle Talks 2008
The weather may be cold, but spring is just around the
corner. Join us each month for a different paddling related
topic in our free winter lecture series.
Picking the Perfect
Paddle
Monday March 17th 6:30pm -8:30pm
You’ve got the perfect
boat but do you have the perfect paddle? It’s an essential
part of the paddling experience but many overlook this
important piece of gear. Having the right paddle for your
specific needs will make your on water experience much more
enjoyable. The Kayak Centre’s own Billy Stark will walk us
through the many considerations of selecting a paddle, from
weight and blade shape to size, budget and paddling style.
We will be hosting the
Rhode Island Canoe and
Kayak Association’s (RICKA) March meeting this night as well
and it’s a great opportunity to learn about the benefits of
RICKA, find out about the local paddling scene and meet some
local paddlers. This event is free and the public is invited
to attend.
Sea Kayaking in
Newfoundland
March 26th 6:30pm - 8:30pm
BCU Coach 4 - Dr. Scott
Cunningham presents an in-depth slide show and talk
about the rugged shores of
Canadašs eastern most provinces. These shore lines have
changed little since the first Europeans arrived over five
hundred years ago. Deep fjords with abrupt, barren walls
alternate with the coastal islands to provide a captivating
land/seascape. Isolated out ports cling to the fringes where
an enduring hospitality belies an uncertain way of life as
fishermen struggle to maintain their livelihood on a
declining resource. Early in the spring, the enormous ice
bergs drift along the northern shores, accompanied by the
large baleen whales that follow the schools of capelin to
their spawning grounds. This is fascinating world paddling
domain that remains, for most, unknown and untouched.
The Ultimate Forward
Stroke
Wednesday April 2nd 6:30pm-8:30pm
Using less energy while
paddling is the most sure fire way to keep a smile on your
face all day long and it begins with your forward stroke.
Join The Kayak Centre as we dissect the forward stroke
through the eyes of ACA/BCU kayak instructor and Werner
Paddles rep Danny Mongno. After assessing your stroke as low
or high-angle, we'll take you through the basic mechanics
and beyond. Throughout the process we will touch on the
advancements in paddle designs and increased options to
improve fit and comfort, helping you achieve the forward
stroke that works best for you. This is an interactive dry
land instructional seminar, so no need to get wet. Just
bring an open mind and get ready to perfect that forward
stroke! Admission is free and refreshments will be provided.
